We viewed the extraordinary basalt columns and then climbed to the top of the island where puffins, unconcerned by the sudden influx of humanity, busily made nests around us and showed their best profiles as we sat clicking our cameras. We were immaculately hosted on the Hebridean Princess by Captain Richard Eaton and his crew, with Egon the steward producing refreshment in the most unlikely of places. After five memorable days, as we made our farewells and headed south from Oban, the skies darkened, the wind increased and for the next week the Western Isles were lashed by one of the most severe storms seen so far in 2018.
