Dad’s team take to the water I’d braced myself for the pain of the rowing machines; what I hadn’t anticipated was how much fun it would be, how it feels to be so close to the water, the exhilarating sense of speed on those rare moments when everything is synchronising as it should. And we did it. No one fell in the Itchen, no boats were wrecked and if you didn’t know anything about the finer points of rowing, you’d think we didn’t look half bad for a bunch of middle-aged Winchester boatie dads. With a little help from our friends... Annual Old Wykehamist lunch in Perth, Western Australia Harry Palmer (H, 95-00) reports: on 20 th June the annual WA OW lunch was hosted by John Prince (Coll, 37- 41) at his home in East Perth. Although exact records have not been kept, it is thought this tradition started around 20 years ago, when Michael Harford (E, 39-43) initiated the first gathering. This year saw a first appearance for Harry Palmer, who moved to Perth in October 2016 with his Australian wife Olivia. As well as the above, in attendance were Christopher and Margaret Oakeley (H, 54-59), Mac and Helen McArthur (Q, 50-52) and Andrew and Lanie Byk (F, 82-87). Goddard Day 2017 : a good turnout of 130 members of the Goddard Legacy Society on Saturday 16 th September ensured a most enjoyable day. The high point was undoubtedly the singing of Psalm 122 to the Beethoven Chant, much beloved by OWs of a certain age. This was followed by an excellent address by the Deputy Headmaster (Academic) Patrick Herring on the 3rd Earl of Shaftesbury, philosopher and OW (published above). As ever, Viv Nutbeam and her team produced an excellent lunch, much appreciated by all. Fathers and sons 35
