Patrick ( Paddy ) Herbert Stephen Wettern ( G , 41-45 ): died 2.7.2017 . Brother of DRFW ( C , 48-51 ), father of AHW ( G , 70-74 ) and LPW ( Coll , 76-80 ) and grandfather of OEW ( G , 2006-11 ). Co Prae , John Mills Prize . Jesus College , Cambridge 45-46 , 2 Engineering . Royal Engineers 1946-48 , with whom he served in BAOR and the UK . In 1948 he joined the family company , Wettern Brothers Ltd , a construction materials and aggregates company . He rose from builders merchant ’ s salesman to senior company partner . His main focus was on Mineralite , a Norwegian mica-facing material sold all over the world . He remained with the company after it was taken over by RMC in 1987 , until he retired in 1992 . An active member of the Worshipful Company of Plaisterers , he was Master 1981 / 82 . He redirected the Company back to its role of supporting the plastering trade . An enthusiastic member of Goddard Society and a member of the WWII Philite group who were ardent admirers of Jack Parr , their housemaster . Married 1955 Margaret Macfadyen ( died 1996 ). He is survived by their two sons and a daughter .
Hugh William Worship Paine ( I , 42-46 ): died 18.3.2017 . Brother of NWP ( I , 48- 52 ). National Service , Royal Engineers . New College , Oxford . Joined Linklaters and Paines in 1951 , becoming a partner in 1961 . He converted to Roman Catholicism and his faith was always very important to him . On retirement in 1983 he became the legacy officer at St Joseph ’ s Hospice , Hackney . He was also a trustee at Mencap . He loved playing the piano and travelling ( particularly Denmark ). He did not marry and is survived by his brother and five nephews and nieces .
Bernard Grant Campbell ( B , 43-48 ): died 4.3.2017 . Son of DFC ( B , 1895- 00 ) and brother of DleSC ( B , 32-37 ). National Service , Royal Signals , with whom he served in Athens . St John ’ s College , Cambridge , 2 Natural Science
1953 , MA 1955 . He first worked as a teacher in Uganda and was proud that one of his students graduated from Cambridge . He returned to Cambridge for his PhD in Physical Anthropology 1957 . Harvard University 1969 and from there he was Professor of Anthropology at UCLA 1969-77 . He received a grant from Gordon Getty and the Leakey Foundation to excavate a site in Northern Iran and they discovered the fossil of a three-toed horse – Hipparion campbelli . He moved to Sedgeford and after his wife had taken a farm management course they decided to run the farm themselves . They spent 30 years happily at Sedgeford and travelling the world visiting the great fossil sites . Publications : Humankind Emerging , which is now in its 9 th edition and is still taught in universities all over the world . He was buried at Sedgeford in the chalk downland looking down into the valley that he loved . Married ( 1 ) 1955 Anne Standley ( marriage dissolved ), ( 2 ) 1962 Margaret Elton-Mills ( marriage dissolved ) and ( 3 ) 1986 Susan Markham , who survives him with his two sons and one daughter .
Charles Christopher Higgins Burne ( E , 44-47 ): died 4.7.2017 . Son of CHB ( E , 03-08 ). 3 rd generation of Wykehamists , father to son . He remembered mounting fire-watch whilst at school , having earlier watched the Crystal Palace burning down in 1936 . He attended Berkshire Institute of Agriculture 1949 . He first farmed in New Zealand , went back to England on the death of his father but returned to Australia . A back injury soon put an end to farming and he became a clerk in the Orient Line Shipping Company , where he was one of the earliest people involved in setting up containerization of cargo transport , now world-wide . He became Victorian manager of Overseas Containers Australia and was Chairman , Australia Britain Trade Association , for which he was appointed OBE in 1984 . On retirement he moved to Flinders where he enjoyed sailing and golf . He was a keen member of Royal
Melbourne Golf Club and the Melbourne Club , where he attended several Old Wykehamist reunions with his friend Colin Harper ( E , 44-48 ). He is survived by June , his wife of 64 years , and their three daughters .
Benjamin ( Ben ) Allen Groves ( K , 44-49 ): died 12.7.2017 . Son of HMG ( K , 18-21 ). Boxing Team . St Catherine ’ s College , Cambridge . He first worked for Standard Oil of New Jersey ( now Exxon Mobil ). In 1958 he was transferred to the USA where he later worked in the securities business . He was committed to Miss Hall ’ s School and led its board of trustees from the mid-70s through the 80s . Married 1970 Elizabeth McLean Scott , who survives him with their two daughters .
David Gerald Sears ( A , 45-48 ): died 26.2.2017 . Special Early Entry Royal Navy 1948 , BRNC Dartmouth , Royal Navy Athletic Colours and Squash . Sub- Lieutenant 1952 , He first served in HMS Devonshire , in which he was involved in putting down a riot in Grenada . He later served in HMS Unicorn , an aircraft carrier which ferried aircraft damaged in the Korean War to Singapore , returning to Japan with repaired aircraft . He then served in HMS Newfoundland , which took part in the Suez crisis and then became Flag Lieutenant to the Flag Officer , Aircraft Carriers . He retired from the RN in 1961 . His second career was in personnel management with Unilever , Howard Machinery and Whitbread . His third career was as recruitment and management consultant with St James Management Recruitment and Campbell Sears Associates . He finally retired to Suffolk where he was involved in the Parish Council . Married ( 1 ) 1966 Anne Tyson ( marriage dissolved ), ( 2 ) 1985 Angela Goodwin , who died in 1999 , and ( 3 ) 2015 Vivienne Cullen , who survives him with his two daughters and one son .
Alastair Douglas Bulkeley Gavin ( I , 45-49 ): died 26.7.2017 . VIII 1948-49 , winning the Princess Elizabeth Challenge Cup in 1949 . National Service in the Royal Marines .
