From the Director
Three gods, worshipped by my
generation of OWs and before and
including the co-founder of this
magazine, have recently departed for
their rowing, footballing and cricketing
heavens and full appreciations of
their lives at Win Coll and elsewhere
appear above. These, together with
43 obituaries, give this edition of the
Trusty Servant a slightly unbalanced
feel perhaps, but I make no apology as
one cannot plan for this in advance!
Requiescant in pace.
Calling all Freddieites!
We will be holding the 150 th Anniversary
Dinner for Freddie’s on Tuesday 2 nd
October 2018. This will take place in
the Great Hall of the Merchant Taylors’
Company in London. Invitations will be
dispatched shortly and we are looking for
a record turnout!
The Chawker’s Anniversary Dinner will
take place on Tuesday 5 th February 2019
and Phil’s on Tuesday 19 th March 2019.

This is the main opportunity for OWs
of all ages to visit the school and to
be royally welcomed, fed and watered,
with a heavily-subsidised lunch in the
Win Coll Soc marquee next to Hunter
Tent. If you have not already done so,
you will find a reply form enclosed with
this issue, giving full details about the
day; alternatively, please register and
pay on the Win Coll Soc website: www.
wincollsoc.org.
Visiting Win Coll –
security arrangements
OWs and Don Soc members are most
welcome, but we have been asked by the
Security Committee to remind those who
wish to visit the school (other than for
an event, when the instructions issued

may be different, or when visiting as a
spectator at matches) that they must
contact the Porters’ Lodge to check
whether the school is open for visitors.
This should be done at least 24 hours in
advance of the planned visit, or by Friday
midday for weekends: 01962 621227
or [email protected]. They should
arrive at the Porters’ Lodge and not enter
by any other gate and will be asked to
produce identification and sign the OW
or Don Soc Visitors books; they will be
issued with a visitor’s badge and lanyard,
to be worn conspicuously during their
visit, please, and returned as they leave
through the same gate. They will also
be given a map showing the areas of the
school that may be visited. Safeguarding
and Child Protection regulations become
ever tighter and OWs and ex-staff are no
longer allowed to come and go at will.
Recent Win Coll Soc Events
Bath and Bristol Dinner: on Friday
3 rd November, 34 OWs and their
wives filled the glorious interior of the
Merchants’ Hall, Clifton. Chairman
Dayrell McArthur (I, 59-64) welcomed
the guests and Martin Clarke (K, 54-
59) described the current condition
of the school. Next year it is back to
Bath at Prior Park College on Friday 2 nd
November.
The Monty Rendall Amiens Dinner
Centennial: on Friday 17 th November,
one hundred years to the day after
the original Amiens Dinner, a short
Remembrance Parade was held in
War Cloister, followed by drinks and a
delicious dinner, skilfully designed by
Viv Nutbeam to resemble the original.
The 70 attendees, the same number
as in France, were made up of senior
OW military, young serving officers
and descendants of the 1917 diners.
