John Michael Finlay Best ( I , 51-56 ): died 28.11.2017 . Son of JRFB ( I , 25- 30 ) and brother of AFB ( I , 53-58 ). Stroked VIII 1958 . National Service , Royal Navy . Lincoln College , Oxford , 3 Law . Qualified as solicitor with Theodore Goddard . He then set up his own practice , Faull Best & Knight . Subsequently he became business manager to Time Out publications . He finally worked in the family business , Wholesale Supplies Ltd , first in Guernsey and then in Jersey . He was keen on opera and sailing – he sailed the Atlantic in both directions . Married ( 1 ) Danae Brooke ( marriage dissolved ) and ( 2 ) Diane Leroy , who survives him with two son of his first marriage .
John Andrew Steadman ( Coll , 51-56 ): died 16.11.2017 . Chapel Choir , Bib Prae , Senior Science Prize . Merton College , Oxford , 2 Chemistry 1961 . MA 1965 . He first worked for ICI 1961-74 and then for the Department for the Environment 1974-95 , looking at the problem of what to do with Nuclear Waste . He took early retirement in 1995 and became a volunteer at the National Trust ’ s Shaw ’ s Corner , home to George Bernard Shaw . He continued his singing with Hertford Choral Society and the Royal Choral Society . He joined the local amateur dramatic society , the Stockton Masquers , for whom in one play a girl had to slap his face ! That slap led to 53 years of marriage . He later joined the Hertford Dramatic and Operatic Society , for whom he enjoyed acting in Amadeus and Faulty Towers . He is survived by Pat , his wife of 53 years , and their son and daughter .
Archibald ( Arch ) Richard Courage ( A , 52-57 ): died 12.8.2017 . VI 1957 . Whilst in Furley ’ s he gardened for a former housemaster - Harry Altham - he was keen on cricket but had little gardening knowledge ! He joined the 15 th / 19 th Hussars in the last intake of National Service . He became an Associate , Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors in 1966 before joining Courage Ltd , Brewers , where he remained until his retirement in 1992 . He loved his golf at Southerness Golf Club over other Golf Clubs with better names – he loved the view across the Solway Firth . Although he was hampered by illness , his flair for photography provided compensation when he could not be doing things himself . He is survived by Fuss , his wife of 50 years , who allowed him to be himself , and their three daughters .
Charles John Richard ( Rick ) Elton ( F , 54-59 ): died 9.10.2017 . Brother of FPWE ( F , 56-60 ). Golf Team , VIII and Hockey XI . College of Law . Hockey for Cornwall , Western Counties Championships for 3 years . Guildford Hockey Club 1 st XI until onset of Multiple Sclerosis in 1969 . Owing to loss of reading sight as a result of MS he was unable to qualify as a solicitor but he worked in Law for 15 years . He was a superb hockey player and for many years was on the verge of an England trial before he was struck down . He founded his own hockey club in Cornwall which was the most powerful club in the county . He was also an excellent golfer with a handicap of 6 at St Enodoc and he played at number 1 in the squash-club team at Newquay . He fought MS with his typical ferocity and determination but by the nature of the disease the sufferer is diminished after each attack . He was eventually reduced to a disability buggy , which he drove in a manner more appropriate to Jenson Button . He always spoke fondly of his days at Winchester and he contributed monthly to the Bursary Fund for the last 17 years of his life . He married Jo Orr in 1968 just a year before his MS was diagnosed . She won the admiration of all by taking over the responsibility of being the breadwinner and started her own business . She survives him with their son and daughter .
Jeremy Rupert Knight ( G , 56-61 ): died 26.11.2017 . Son of RWK ( G , 23-28 ) and father of MAOK ( G , 87-92 ). VI 59-60 ( Captain ) and Soccer XI 1960 . Having won Junior Steeplechase he came second in Senior Steeplechase 1959 and 1960 . Articled with Kemp Chatteris & Co , ACA 1967 . He then embarked on a successful career as an accountant . He first worked for Gulf Oil Co in 1967 and then successively for Brooklands Motor Co , Volvo Concessionaires Ltd , Miles Druce Metals , Redman Heenan International Ltd before moving in 1979 to Saudi Arabia with Allied Medical Group Ltd ( Riyadh ). He later worked as General Manager for NEM General Insurance Association Ltd 1987 and then as Head of Finance with Haseltine Lake & Co 1992-2003 . He was always remembered as a sportsman . He played rackets , squash and fives at Winchester . He had a single-figure handicap on the golf course . He and Adrienne , his wife , overcame the death of their daughter and younger son in a car accident when their second son was in the middle of his GSCEs . In 2012 he was diagnosed with a rare bone-marrow cancer . With determination he lived for another 6 years . He played 18 holes of golf just 11 days before he died . Like the good accountant that he was he contributed a modest sum to Winchester College every month for the last twenty-three years of his life . Survived by Adrienne , for whom he was a ‘ rock and soul mate ’ for 48 years , and their son .
Roger Barry Huyshe ( Coll , 62-65 ): died 12.11.2017 during a cycle ride in Derbyshire . He took a gap year working for English Electric . Exhibitioner , Jesus College , Cambridge , Mathematics 1966- 69 . He worked initially with British Steel before Barclays 1987-96 , for whom he was responsible for creating the entire security system for Barclaycard . He later worked for Protek Systems and then Electronic Data Systems before retiring in 2008 . He played croquet seriously , winning the National Croquet Classic Championship for amateurs in 1989 . At Cambridge he played both chess and Go , returning to Go later in life to compete in National and International tournaments . He served on the board of British Go Association , becoming President in 2016 . In retirement he joined the Shropshire Wildlife Trust and was Treasurer of “ Hintstock Village Initiative ”, an organisation formed to
