From 17 th to 20 th September 2018, Michael Wallis and James Webster plan to take a tour retracing the great battle before Amiens in August 1918 and the turning of the tide, with the eventual break-through of the Hindenburg line in September. As before, we shall explore this on the ground and through the experiences and lives of the Old Wykehamists who fought in this final phase of the Great War. 8 th August 1918 was described by Ludendorff as ‘the Black Day of the German Army’. This was the day when the British Army, along with the Imperial Forces from Canada and Australia, started pushing back the German Army. This initiated a period of constant advance by combined arms tactics, which could not have been in greater contrast to 1 st July 1916 or the misery of Passchendaele in November 1917. We shall stay in the provincial town of Péronne with its wonderful Historial de la Grande Guerre museum. We shall look at the fighting beyond Péronne and before the St Quentin canal bringing the battles to life. This is the final part of our 39 trilogy of battlefield tours, concluding our centenary commemorations of the Great War. All participants will need to travel as a group with Eurostar. If you would like to register for this last Great War battlefield tour please send a non-refundable deposit of £50 per person, payable to Winchester College Society, to the Win Coll Soc office.
