The Tree of Gernika Dinner : on Friday 10 th February 2017 , Nick Rankin and George Steer ( K , 53-58 ) were Guests of Honour at a dinner in the Warden ’ s Lodgings . Nick had been the tour-guide on the Wykeham Patrons ’ trip to the Basque Country last September , ‘ in the footsteps of George Lowther Steer ’, and George ’ s father ( Coll , 23-28 ) had reported so famously on the bombing of the town of Guernica in 1937 during the Spanish Civil War . Nick , whose biography of Steer , Telegram from Guernica , is highly recommended , had used his precious first edition of Steer ’ s own The Tree of Gernika ( the Basque spelling ) as his trusty prop throughout the trip , but it had seen better days . David Fellowes subsequently ‘ borrowed ’ it in order to commission a complete refurbishment and upgrade by Tim Wiltshire , Wells ’ book-binding maestro . 17 other diners were present to witness Steer jun returning Steer sen ’ s book back to his biographer .
