Peter David Partner (Staff, 55-85): died
17.1.2015 aged 90. Father of SCP (G, 7275). Educated at Queen Elizabeth’s
Grammar School, Barnet. Royal Navy
1943-46, demobbed as temporary Lt (S)
RNVR. Magdalen College, Oxford, 2 Mod
Hist 1950, DPhil 1955. Scholarship British
School at Rome 1951. Italian
Correspondent for The Observer 1954-55.
He arrived at the School in 1955 and
became Housemaster of Kenny’s 1964-75.
Member, Institute of Advanced Study,
Princeton, New Jersey 1976-77. He wrote
several books including The Lands of St
Peter (1972). Married (1) 1953 Leila Fadil
(died 1990) and (2) Joyce Hitchcock. He is
survived by two sons and a daughter. See

John Ramsay Darling (Staff, 55-83): died as
a result of a tragic accident 27.9.2014.
Father of RWRD (Coll, 67-71) and TJD
(F, 73-78). Educated Queen Elizabeth
Grammar School, Barnet; Wadham
College, Oxford. 1 Nat Sci Mods 1950, 2
Physics 1952. MA 1956. Before arriving at
Winchester he taught at Blundell’s and
Charterhouse. Throughout his career he
was a devoted Physics teacher. At
Winchester he collaborated with his Lab
Steward, Lewington, to design and build
novel physics experiments. From 1955 he
ran Sailing Club. He spent his sabbatical in
Uganda 1965. After Winchester he taught
at Newton College, Lima, Peru 1988-94.
He was good at making strangers feel at
home and for two years he acted as a
Gentleman Host on board the QEII.
Winchester City Councillor 1967-74 and
Hampshire County Councillor 1974-83.
He represented HCC on the board of
Southampton University. He retired to
Yarmouth, Isle of Wight. The best-selling
novel Crocodile Soup by his daughter, Julia,
gives a magical version of his life. Married
(1) 1953 Patricia Vickers (dissolved) and
(2) 1996 Marisol Campomanes (dissolved).
He is survived by three sons and two
daughters.
John Laurance Pinsent (E, 29-35): died
15.12.2014 aged 98. He was fifth Sen Man.
Son of JRP (E, 02-07; Staff, 26-33), brother
of RAP (D, 45-50) and father of JEP
(E, 63-67). Soccer XI and VI. Trinity
College, Cambridge 1936. Commissioned
Royal Artillery 1939. Instructor in
Gunnery. Demobbed as Major 1946. He
first qualified as a solicitor but in 1950 he
embarked on a successful career as a farmer,
building up a dairy herd first with South
Devons, then Guernseys and finally
Friesians. He was a self-taught wood carver
and left behind him many beautiful works
to remember him by. He retained his
interest in golf and after a gap of 30 years he
reduced his handicap to 6. Married 1940
Margaret Favell who died in 2010. He is
survived by their four daughters and a son.
Peter Hywel Harman Jones (D, 31-35):
died aged 97. Eighth Sen Man. Father of
MAHJ (D, 57-61).Whilst at the School he
once went home for the holidays in the
Gold Coast – two weeks by boat out, two
weeks holiday and two weeks by boat back.

Demobbed Major. After the War he
worked in the City with his father-in-law.
Director, Enstock Trust Ltd; Chairman,
Rock Secretariat Ltd. On the board of
Balakhany Ltd, a water-hole-drilling
company in Nigeria and Chad. He was also
involved in the management of Lundy
Island and in the subsequent publicity and

sale of the island to the National Trust in
1969. Retired 1980. He had a great love of
racing and was a member of Kempton and
Sandown. He lived a long and fulfilling life
which could have been stopped before it
began: the ship on which his pregnant
mother was travelling was torpedoed by the
Germans but she was rescued. Married
1940 Ruth Harman (died 2006). He is
survived by their daughter. His son
predeceased hm.
Michael Thomas Barstow (G, 34-39):
died 11.11.2014 aged 94. Father of MJB
(G, 63-68) and JDB (G, 67-71). Co Prae.
He achieved a remarkable record in that
he raised books in his first three halves MP3, MP2 and MP1 thereby entering
Senior Part before he was 15 years old. He
had a remarkable tolling history: 1936 Jun
Steeplecha first equal; 1937 Sen
¯
Steeplecha fifth; and 1938 second. He
¯
won the mile in 1938 and 1939 and was
Captain of Athletics. Christ Church,
Oxford, PPE War BA 1940.
Commissioned 1940 Royal Horse
Artillery, with which he served at
Alamein, Tunis and Salerno. He returned
to the UK to prepare for D Day and
landed on D + 1 and took part in
Operation Goodwood. He later became
ADC to General Erskine at SHAEF. He
was mentioned in despatches and was
awarded both the French and Belgian
Croix de Guerre: his final posting was to
join the government of lawless Berlin.
After the war he first farmed for his fatherin-law until the latter died in 1957. He
then bought a quarter of the estate and ran
the farm successfully, gathering in the 69th
harvest. In 1985 he was High Sherriff of
North Yorkshire and in 1991 Governor of
the Merchant Adventurers of York.
