wonderful Tutors, notably John Falconer,
Michael Fontes and Adam Crick and, of
course, by a brilliant domestic team
headed for most of our time by the
incomparable Mary Williams. Co-writing
a Trant’s Revue with Joss Whedon (Buffy
the Vampire Slayer et al) was a highlight,
while music in Phil’s was always of the
highest standard, thanks to a steady

stream of talented players and singers. I
had wondered whether having breakfast,
lunch and sometimes tea with 60
teenagers every day would pall, but it
never did. Occasional dramas like the
Great Phil’s/Freddie’s Firework Battle or
the setting off of the alarm system during
the annual House Dance kept us on our
toes. There were many triumphs, a few
disasters and also some tragedies. I was
thankful that Housedons before 2000
received few emails and had hardly any
encounters with mobile phones or other
electronic gadgets. We look back on our
twelve years in Phil’s with tremendous
fondness, as do our children.

John Thorn, Headmaster from 1968 until
1985, celebrated his 90th birthday on
28th April. To mark the occasion he was
presented with the following verses,
written in Latin by the Senior Tutor,
Stephen Anderson, and skilfully rendered
Johanni Leonardo Thorn A.M.
Te, qui tot lustris perfunctus Nestora vincis,
Wiccamicorum hodie coetus avere iubet.
Olim Informator pueros magna arte docebas;
Iam accipias laudem, Spinee care, piam.
To John Leonard Thorn M.A.
You’ve outdone Nestor as to Age
And Wykeham’s Sons salute you, Sage,
This day;
With utmost skill, dear HM Thorn,
You shap’d our boys; that you were born
Hooray!
