SUSTAINABILITY:
A Reminder from American Association of Zoo Keepers
(Louisville Chapter)
Springtime. It’s a time for warmer days, regrowth and some spring
cleaning. Many of us are packing away our winter wardrobe and unpacking
clothing for spring and summer. Maybe you’ve already started and are fi nding
shoes that don’t fi t quite right anymore or just don’t suit your taste.
Pause before you open the trash bin! According to Planet Aid, the midsoles
of running shoes can take 1,000 years to break down. Shoes made from
organic materials, such as leather or wool, when put in landfi lls and allowed
to breakdown release harmful methane gas. This gas is a greenhouse gas that
contributes to climate change.
Instead of throwing your shoes away,
bring them to the Louisville Zoo!
The Membership Offi ce now has a large WaterStep drop off box located
inside. WaterStep is a local organization that uses the shoes to help fund safe
drinking water projects all over the world. Shoes dropped off in the WaterStep
box are used in many different ways. Some are cleaned up and are able to be
reused. Some parts are recycled as playground turf material. You can learn
more at WaterStep.org.
So, put your best foot forward this spring and donate those old shoes. Your
house will be less cluttered, and you’ll be helping to protect the environment
for people and wildlife.
