MEMBER SPOTLIGHT The Newby Family There are many great benefits to having a Zoo membership. Meet a family who’s making the most of their visits. The Newby family has had a membership to the Louisville Zoo for three years. When the weather is nice, the family of five is here at least once a week or more. Chad Newby was excited to share his family’s experiences. “Having a Louisville Zoo membership has been awesome for our entire family,” he said. “Family time is very important to us and the Zoo has allowed us to do things regularly as an entire fam- ily. It’s become part of our routine.” Our Zoo members know there are always new things to see and experience no matter how many times you visit! “For a while, every Sunday after church we would come to visit baby gorilla Kindi,” Chad shared. He and his wife Jocelyn agreed that, “seeing the dedication of the Zoo keepers dur- ing that time was heartwarm- ing.” The family was also able to see multiple performances of the “Wings of the World” bird show that came through during the summer — 4-year-old Sasha was a big fan. “Sasha watched it as many times as possible. She even got to meet Hollywood, the African crowned crane.” There are many events, activities and animals to see at the Zoo, and everyone in the Newby family has their favorites. Sasha and 3-year-old Solomon’s favorite spot during the summer is the Papa John’s Splash Park. The youngest, Selena, likes watching the lions roar. Chad enjoys getting up close with the gorillas in Gorilla Forest and Jocelyn is fascinated by the Amur tigers. Other favorite animals to visit include the tortoises, penguins and orangutans in the Islands and Qannik the polar bear in Glacier Run. Solomon’s absolute favorite: the giraffes. “He LOVES them,” Chad said. The Louisville Zoo has created many opportunities for together- ness and wonderful family memo- ries for the Newby family. “It’s a great value for the money,” Chad said. “But most importantly for us as parents, is the educational value. Not only do we get family time and the kids get to see the animals, but they get to learn through the daily talks and demonstration sessions that take place.” Louisville Zoo Trunkline • Winter 2016 • 9
