Curriculum Savannah is hot—for history “Savannah loves student groups,” says Melissa Hayes, group tour and entertainment manager with Visit Savannah. “We have a wide range of opportunities for students of all ages.” Here is a look at some of the experiences that await in Georgia’s fifth-largest city: Visiting a historical home History is alive in many of the city’s house museums and cultural centers. Students can visit the Owens-Thomas House, see writer Flannery O’Connor’s childhood home and tour the birthplace of Girl Scouts founder Juliette Gordon Low. Taking a city tour The heritage of Savannah, which is home to one of the nation’s largest historical districts, can be absorbed by guided tour on foot or aboard a trolley. Groups can stop at the Massie Heritage Center, which offers educational programs for all grades on the lives of children in the early 19th century. Owens-Thomas House Walking the park-like squares The oldest city in Georgia, Savannah was designed in a grid pattern with 24 park-like squares. Students can walk the squares and learn about the architecture of the historical buildings. Seeing a stop on the Underground Railroad The First African Baptist Church sheltered runaway slaves on their journey to freedom before the Civil War. It’s also home to the longest- established black congregation in North America.
