I Want to Go There
WINNIPEG
Assiniboine Park & Zoo
Canadian Museum for Human Rights
Student workshop at the Canadian Museum of Human Rights
Manitoba’s capital city is home to a number of student-
centered attractions, including the Canadian Museum for
Human Rights, which is the country’s only national museum
located outside of Ottawa. The sleek design and unique shape
of the museum make it one of the most recognizable buildings
in North America.
Exhibits and galleries provide accounts of the human
experience around the world that challenge students to
consider their own concepts of freedom, identity and
discrimination. Programming and thematic guided class tours
can be tailored to distinct educational levels and to meet
curriculum needs.
A new public tour, which explores the complex human rights
history of Canada’s Métis tribe, is free with admission. The
75-minute walk takes students through many of the exhibits
related to First Nations rights, and it includes activities and
discussion questions. The tour begins at the Ancestral Place
Circle in the museum’s welcome hall and visits the Indigenous
Perspectives gallery and the Canadian Journeys gallery’s
Métis exhibits.
Another popular destination for school groups is Winnipeg’s
26 NTA Trip Planner for Student Travel
Assiniboine Park & Zoo. During a visit they can see polar bears
and seals swimming overhead in the award-winning Journey
to Churchill exhibit. In the Leatherdale International Polar Bear
Conservation Centre, the only rescue center for orphaned
polar bear cubs in Canada, they can engage with actual field
researchers who are working to better understand Arctic
species and the impacts of climate change.
