I Want to Go There LOUISVILLE LANCASTER Strasburg Rail Road Student groups heading to Lancaster, Pennsylvania, can take part in programs showcasing many aspects of local culture. As part of the new Iron Horse & Amish Farm tour, they can check out two of Lancaster County’s unique offerings: the nation’s oldest short-line steam train and America’s original Amish community. The three-hour adventure starts at the Strasburg Rail Road with a steam train ride through thousands of acres of Amish farmland before the group heads to Old Windmill Farm for an interactive tour of the Lapp family’s 72-acre property. In addition to visiting the 1700s farmhouse, students can enjoy the barnyard animals through feeding and milking programs. Ice cream lovers will enjoy some tasty touring as part of the Turkey Hill Experience. Located in a converted historical silk mill in nearby Columbia, the attraction includes hands-on exhibits about the Turkey Hill’s famous ice cream and tea flavors. During a stop at the Taste Lab, students can create their own ice cream treat by combining liquid flavoring with mix-ins and syrups. Louisville Slugger Museum, world’s largest baseball bat Located in downtown Louisville, Museum Row on Main is home to some of the city’s marquee attractions. Two places in the historical area that bring learning to life are the Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory and the Kentucky Science Center. From street level, students can see the world’s largest baseball bat, a 120-foot Louisville Slugger that towers over the museum’s entrance. Travel planners can book a guided factory tour or work with staff on customized experiences that showcase the famous bat manufacturer’s archival collection and galleries. Across the street at the Kentucky Science Center, school groups can check out three floors of interactive exhibits. Through the attraction’s Youth Science Summit series, teens can interact with and learn from science professionals on a range of topics. At the Challenger Learning Center, students can take part in a space project that requires them to work together and solve problems to ensure the mission’s success.
