HUNTSVILLE
With the U.S. Space & Rocket Center leading the way, Huntsville is one of
the South’s most diverse student destinations. At the northern Alabama
city’s top attraction, school groups discover the history of the U.S. space
program. As part of guided tours, interactive exhibits and behind-the-
scenes programs, they learn about different eras of space exploration and
see rockets, space vehicles and artifacts.
Two other popular learning centers are Burritt on the Mountain’s
Rosenwald Schoolhouse and the HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology.
The recently opened four-classroom schoolhouse details the rich history
of the Huntsville branch of a network of schools across 15 states that
helped educate disadvantaged children in the early 1900s. One interactive
program provides a look at a day in the life of a 1918 Alabama student.
The HudsonAlpha Institute offers a series of education programs,
ranging from hourly and full-day workshops to week-long summer
programs. On-site field trips for visiting middle school and high school
groups cover topics such as Investigating the Genetics of Cancer,
Exploring Enzymes and Genome Cache.
