The South Carolina Aquarium is a favorite spot for school groups visiting Charleston , and the attraction will open the Zucker Family Sea Turtle Recovery on May 27 . The new facility will be a hospital for sick and injured sea turtles , and it will include an interactive exhibit where students can learn how human activities affect the creatures .
“ Stations will allow guests to learn the causes of sea turtle stranding and to practice diagnosing a mock patient ,” says Jennifer Aiken , sales manager for the Charleston Area Convention and Visitors Bureau . The Recovery ’ s recuperating turtles will live in tanks behind one-way glass , so guests can view them .
“ A classroom and enhanced theater will provide a glimpse into what happens before and after a turtle ’ s time in recovery ,” says Aiken .
Charleston is also full of historical attractions , and students can learn about African- American history at Boone Hall Plantation . The plantation offers its Exploring the Gullah Culture presentation , which explains through stories and songs the historical origins of Gullah , a culture born from the traditions slaves brought to the barrier islands of South Carolina . Groups can also dine on farm-to-table meals prepared with fruits and vegetables grown on the grounds .
