Located 20 minutes from Nashville, Andrew
Jackson’s Hermitage is the impressive
home of the seventh U.S. president. Visitors
do more than take a walk through history
on the 1,120-acre estate, according to
Jason Nelson, vice president of marketing
and sales.
“This place is like a blank canvas,” he
says. “Tour operators can tell us what
they want, and we’ll make it happen—
anything from Instagram scavenger hunts
to ghost tours.”
Guides dressed in period costumes
lead visitors through the 1837 mansion,
which contains 80 percent of its original
furnishings, including Jackson’s
personal belongings.
The future president fought in the
Revolutionary War at age 13, was orphaned
at 14 and achieved fame as a military hero
during the War of 1812 at the Battle of
New Orleans. Jackson’s leadership in a
young America was filled with conflict and
contradiction, which visitors learn about in
a new orientation film, “Jackson,” shown in
the visitor’s center.
“Our award-winning exhibit, ‘Born for
a Storm,’ features the most extensive
collection of any early presidential home in
the country,” Nelson says.
A two-hour visit to Hermitage can include
viewing the film and exhibits in the visitor
center and museum, touring the mansion,
walking through the gardens and cemetery,
and visiting slave quarters and the original
farmhouse. During a half-day stay, visitors
can explore additional buildings, hike a
nature trail and grab a light lunch at the
on-site restaurant, The Kitchen Cabinet.
