I Want to Go There | U.S. Midwest MADISON A good start to seeing downtown Madison, Wisconsin, is a tour of the state capitol building, which features the only granite dome in the country. Glass mosaics, stately architecture, hand-carved furniture, gold trim and 43 varieties of stone from all over the world make up the inside. While strolling the premises, visitors can take in the sights of more than 25,000 annual plants, trees and the building’s grandeur. The new Frank Lloyd Wright Trail is a 200-mile self-guided motor route with stops in nine counties in southern Wisconsin. Wright was a world-renowned architect who developed the prairie style, and the First Unitarian Society building in Madison is one of the best known and most visited of his projects. The tour allows travelers to learn about Wright’s connections to Madison and Wisconsin and to see many of his organic-style structures. Hop Head Tours offers small-group excursions featuring tours and tastings at local breweries, wineries and distilleries. Some of the company’s tours take travelers beyond downtown to breweries on Madison’s east side and to others just outside the city. And if groups want to take in a baseball game, the Madison Mallard’s home, Warner Park (aka the Duck Pond), was voted the No. 1 summer stadium by Ballpark Digest readers.
