TripAdvisor’s 2016 Travelers’ Choice Top 25 Museums in the U.S. 14 NTA Trip Planner for Group Leaders The museums of the National Mall in Washington, D.C., are constantly pulling artifacts and objects from their massive collections to create new exhibits, and they regularly welcome traveling shows. The National Gallery of Art’s East Building has reopened following a renovation that added more than 12,000 square feet of gallery space and increased the number of artworks on display from 350 to 500. The building showcases much of the museum’s growing modern and contemporary collection, including works by Mark Rothko, Alexander Calder and Jasper Johns. Groups checking out the revamped East Building this fall also can see “Vermeer and the Masters of Genre Painting: Inspiration and Rivalry” in the West Building. Ten works by painter Johannes Vermeer will be on display, and the exhibition will run Oct. 22–Jan. 1, 2018. The National Museum of the American Indian will also debut a major exhibition this fall. “Americans” will look at the words and images from Native American culture that have influenced the culture of the United States. The exhibit will also consider the enduring place of Native Americans in U.S. history through a close look at four stories: Thanksgiving, Pocahontas, the Trail of Tears and the Battle of Little Bighorn.
