Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, is home to the oldest and largest Amish
community in the U.S., and tour groups can learn about the Amish way of life
at several area attractions.
“Our Amish friends follow a deeply religious, family-centered lifestyle and
have maintained their traditions ... throughout the last 300 years,” says Joel
Cliff of Discover Lancaster.
The Amish Experience is an interpretive center where groups can take
guided tours of farmland and see re-creations of an Amish homestead and a
one-room schoolhouse, each filled with historical furnishings. As they explore,
visitors learn about the Amish and their beliefs through the narrative of the
site’s fictional inhabitants, the Fisher family.
The Amish Farm and House is another Amish attraction, and it offers
countryside bus tours, dinner options and guided walks at the property’s
1805 farmhouse. At the Amish Village in nearby Ronks, visitors can follow
midday tours with a luncheon where they interact with Amish staff and tour
guides.
Sight & Sound Theatres in Strasburg is popular with tour groups. Its stage
productions bring biblical stories to life and feature elaborate sets, visual
effects and live animals. In March 2018, the company will debut “Jesus” on
its three-sided stage. The show, which will run until January 2019, will include
one of the largest LED screens ever used for a theatrical production.
