I Want to Go There | Canada RICHMOND TORONTO The Toronto Zoo British Columbia played host to the 2010 Winter Olympics, and the glory of the games can be relived during a visit to the Richmond Olympic Oval. The city, which is located just outside of Vancouver, transformed the competition venue into an international center for sports, wellness, culture and entertainment. During a visit, students can go skating on one of the rinks, scale a climbing wall or head to one of six hardwood sport courts. In late 2015, the Richmond Oval welcomed the Richmond Olympic Experience, a dynamic attraction featuring hands-on sporting simulations and challenges related to the Olympics. Its highly interactive components allow visitors to feel what it’s like to compete on the world’s biggest athletic stage. The Richmond Olympic Experience is the first member of the International Olympic Committee’s network of museums to be located in North America. A trip to the Toronto Zoo allows groups to see more than 5,000 animals representing nearly 470 species. As they tour the park, students can explore popular areas such as the Gorilla Rainforest, the Great Barrier Reef, the Xie Shou Giant Panda Experience and the Kids Discovery Zone. The zoo’s daily series of keeper talks and animal feedings provide more information on animals such as giraffes, African penguins, komodo dragons, leopards and otters. Other interactive programs introduce visitors to some of the zoo’s newest residents, including a group of white lion cubs, Canada’s first giant panda cub, a female polar bear cub and a male Indian rhino calf. The attraction also offers many grade-level-specific tours that cover topics such as endangered species, biodiversity, sustainable ecosystems and climate change. Three other curriculum-centered programs—half-day workshops, conservation presentations and the green technology tour—provide additional insights for high school students.
