This September, Washington, D.C., will welcome another state-of-the-art attraction, the National Museum of African American History and Culture, to the National Mall. This new museum, which will be located on five acres adjacent to the Washington Monument, will present the story of America through the lens of the African-American experience. During a visit, students will learn more about how the richness of the AfricanAmerican culture helped shape the United States. Galleries will include objects, photographs, moving images, documents and art from many periods of American history such as the era of slavery, the postCivil War Reconstruction years, the Harlem Renaissance and the civil rights movement. The museum’s foundational collections will feature items that reflect the historical and cultural links of African Americans to the African Diaspora. The museum, which is part of the Smithsonian Institution’s family of attractions, also will offer a number of themed programs and special events to complement its displays and artifacts.
