James Smiddy Smiddy Smiddy, a 1943 graduate of Williamsburg High School, went on to become the nation’s all-time winningest basketball coach until being surpassed by Texas high school coach Leta Andrews, who captured win No.1,218 on Dec. 9, 2005. He compiled a 1,217-204 record while coaching eight seasons at Tennessee’s Charleston High School before taking over at Tennessee’s Bradley Central High School program in 1957. He guided the Bearettes to fi ve state championships (1962, 1970, 1973, 1975, 1976) and to mythical national titles in 1975 and 1976. He was selected as National Coach of the Year in 1985. His accomplishments led to his induction into many Hall of Fames, including — the Bradley County Hall of Fame, Tennessee Secondary Schools Hall of Fame, Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame and National High School Sports Hall of Fame. He was also inducted into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame in 1999.
