August 17-19: Laurel County Homecoming October 15: Thriller Ride September 26-28: World Chicken Festival A Tri-County favorite returns once again in September with London’s World Chicken Festival. The festival began in 1990 in honor of Col. Harland Sanders, whose home and first res- taurant were in Laurel County. Contests, entertainment, food and vendors are offered during the four-day festival. Multiple stages offer plenty of entertainment and, as befits a festival that honors Laurel County's most famous cook, fried chicken is the festival's favorite food. It is cooked in the world’s largest stainless steel skillet. The original skillet was manufactured by London Bucket Co. Inc. in 1991 and had its festival inauguration in 1992. A new skillet was constructed and manufactured by Logan Steel and Jeff Williams Welding in 1999. It measures 10 feet, 6 inches in diam- eter and has an 8-foot handle. More information about the festival can be found at chickenfestival.com.
