Oct. 6-12: For more than 70 years, Barbourville Daniel Boone and Knox County have paid homage to one of America’s most celebrated pio- Festival neers — Daniel Boone. The Daniel Boone Festival, held the second week of October. Since 1948, the essential parts of what makes the festival a tradition — like the signing of the Cane Treaty, the Cherokee Entertainment, the Friendship Dance and the Pancake Breakfast — continue. That first festival in 1948 was held in May, and lasted less than two full days. Now the festival runs a full week, and has become appointment visiting for thousands of people. Festival organizers have credited the event's stability through the decades with its continuing success — and that stability comes from the many long- time board members who have dedi- cated their time to organizing the event each year. The festival features a carnival, primi- tive camp, an art, photograph and quilt show, music and much more. A complete listing of festival events, information, directions and history can be found at www.danielboonefestival. com or call 606-546-4300.
