August 3 : Kayaking for Kids September 5-7: Old Fashioned Trading Days Kayaking for Kids is a fundraising event that began in 2017 as a way to help benefit the area youth. "We do that race to promote our river access and promote our river in our county and to raise money for some kids programs in the area," said Whitley County Judge/Executive Pat White Jr. Director of County Projects Amber Owens said the original idea for the inaugural event came because Cumberland River was full of kayakers as community members began picking up the trend and organizers of the event thought it would be a fun, new event for the community. The money raised makes it possible for Whitley County Tourism and the Whitley County Fiscal Court to provide scholarships for kids in the Corbin and Williamsburg Upward Basketball leagues. White said the Upward Basketball scholarships allow kids who may not otherwise be able to afford registration an opportunity to participate. The remainder of the money is divided amongst the Family Resource Centers at the eight ele- mentary schools throughout the county, includ- ing in the Whitley, Williamsburg and Corbin school districts. RECONNECT WITH BETTER HEARING Festival fans can get a glimpse of history in September during Williamsburg's annual Old Fashioned Trading Days. The festival highlights the area's rich Kentucky heritage, and focuses on sharing that heritage with students. Bluegrass and gospel music is played and food vendors are also on hand to satisfy the appetites of hungry visitors. Local artists also share and sell their work dur- ing the festival. Every September after Labor Day, the festival begins on Thursday and runs through Saturday night at the city's court- house square. Started in 1983, Old Fashioned Trading Days was originally coordinated by the D ownt own Merchants Association.
