Message from a Fellow Activist

By Dr. William A. Merritt

The fight for civil rights is an ongoing process. From the days of individuals not having the right to speak, to vote, or to even use the same accommodations; the spoken word has been the inspiration as well as, the blueprint for change. Many times the words have come from the pulpit in the Deep South and spread throughout the world. A gentleman by the name of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., said “I have a dream…” That dream has been fulfilled in so many ways by so many. Maya Angelou came from humble beginnings, but her development as a poet, as an activist, as a leader in our community is unparalleled.

I was honored and blessed to have met and interacted with her on numerous occasions in our fight for the struggle human rights. With this in mind we would like to work with the principles of TimeBanking in continuing the “dream” through the ongoing efforts of Dr. Maya Angelou’s commitment in the field of health and wellness that is exhibited through her namesake wellness center in Winston-Salem, NC.

We share the same commitment that there are no more throw away people. Reciprocity, the concept of paying-it-forward, of the individuals that receive services through her center, can be a guiding light to maintain the memory of Dr. Maya Angelou. Rest In Peace.
