COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT Issue 4: Race relations Participants were also displeased about the prevalence of negative Indian stereotypes such as poor appearance and hygiene as well as alcoholism and low education. They also pointed out popular misconceptions of Indians being a monolith in terms of language, religion, social circles etc. Based on a survey published by Channel News Asia and the Institute of Policy Studies in 2016, 45% of Singaporeans indicated that they hold negative stereotypes of other races. Surprisingly, 27% of the respondents claimed it is not racist to make stereotypical comments such as members of a particular group are being lazy.
