SPOT claims that it's devices, especially the Gen3, has initiated almost 6,000 rescues around the world, and we can atest to how goood the device and service is. Now, they're offering a device that takes the next step and offers electronic communications from almost anywhere in the world - the SPOT X. SPOT X provides 2-way satellite messaging so you can stay connected to family, friends and colleagues whenever you’re outside of mobile (cellular) range, including direct communication with Search & Rescue services in case of a life-threatening emergency. SPOT X even provides you with your own personal mobile U.S. number so others can message you directly from their cell phone or other SMS devices at any time. Working through the Globalstar and GPS satellite networks means it doesn't need a mobile (cell) phone network to work, essentially it can send and receive text or email messages from and to anywhere in the world. It's a stand alone device and that's the beauty of the SPOT X. It's full QWERTY keyboard and black & white screen make it resemble an old school Blackberry, that's not a problem, at least you know it's robust enough to take on most adventures. The SPOT X has all of the features that have made previous SPOT devices a favourite with those that head away from civilsation and added features will make the X even more of a favourite. S.O.S. Emergency communication, through the GEOS International Emergency Response Co-ordination Centre, is at the forefront of SPOT devices and the X is no different however, now you have the ability to communicate directly with emergency service whilst they are enroute. GPS tracking remains a feature and allows for 2.5, 5, 10, 30 or 60 minute intervals to be recorded meaning any of your family or friends are able to follow your adventure. There's also the favourite, check in, feature that means you can send a short message to whoever you like letting them know you've reached a destination and are safe and well. Posting to scial media has now also been added, providing greater flexibility to tracking your route. There's also a built in compass, along with programmable waypoints, making navigation so much easier. At arund US$250.00 the SPOT X device is a relatively cheap device for staying safe however, a monthly or annual service subscription must be taken up. These start at US$19.99 per month / US$199.99 per year. Possibly cheap insurance to be able to let loved ones know that you are always in touch.
