friendly vendor, a Tur-
kic-speaking Muslim Ui-
ghur from the Xinjiang
Province, is a familiar
face along the oak-lined
streets of the trendy for-
mer French Concession
of Shanghai. Bordered
by eight countries in-
cluding the former Soviet
Central Asian republics,
Mongolia, Afghanistan,
Pakistan and India, Xin-
jiang is China’s largest
province and was an in-
tegral part of the ancient
silk trade route.
