What Interesting Training Projects Have You Implemented at That People Thing?

We’ve recently completed a programme for the top 100 leaders in a logistics company. We’ve been running the Finance Leadership Programme for the Welsh Assembly. And we’ve been working with the Leadership Team at a global pharmaceutical company as they go through massive re-organisation.

These are all interesting because we’ve partnered with the client. The distinction between internal HR and L&D and external consultancy is eroded and you just become a team of people working together on a project.

Take Us Through A Typical Day?

There’s no such thing! When I’m in the office I’m flat out from 8.30 until about 6. I’m making phone calls, talking to the team, writing articles or proposals, signing cheques! Some days I’m just travelling. If you’ve done any business travel, you’ll know this is exhausting.

Days often begin very early and when you arrive at your destination; you are battling jetlag but you need to be on form because you are with the client for dinner. When it’s a workshop delivery day, it’s energising. You’re in the moment. Nothing exists outside of the workshop room (except a lot of muffins and biscuits). And then you are back in a taxi or plane heading home, trying to catch up on all the emails you missed when you were in the "other world" of the workshop.

How Do You Spend Your Day's Off When You Are Not The CEO of Biz-Group?

If i'm in Dubai then on a sailing boat out on the water, which I enjoy. If I am outside of Dubai, my ideal scenario would be travelling on Safari, we have a beautiful place on the beach down in South Africa.

Even though I’m in the role of CEO, I thoroughly enjoy travelling and seeing new markets and meeting new businesses in new industries. My nickname is ‘What’s Next?’, as I’m always looking to find 'what’s next' in this industry. That may still be work, but I consider it 'playtime’.

What Advice Would You Give Our Readers For Training Success In The Middle East?

Great question. I think first of all train and develop people in a subject you are passionate about, that way it never feels like work.

The second thing, is to work extraordinarily hard as it’s an unforgiving industry, everyday is a new day and you need to be on your game, that is why passion helps.

We are spending a lot of time right now on return on investment and proving business impact. If you can find a subject that you are really passionate about and makes a difference in organizations, then you can do that day in day out .

Start proving those cases to clients and that will make you successful.
