LEADERSHIP

BY TONY PALLADINO

It seems every time I open a business magazine nowadays there’s an article on how “leadership” is in “crisis”. Forbes, Harvard Business Review, and The Times – all have used the phrase to title articles about Politics, the Global Economy and Business. We have a dearth of leadership talent which has led us to the dark places we currently reside.

But is it true?

Apparently there is a widespread loss of faith in

our major institutions, lack of trust in our politicians and a ruined global economy brought about through poor choices of our business leaders from the 80s onwards.

It’s a dark picture. But is it an accurate one?

When reading these articles it’s important to remember the context they are written in.

Firstly - sensationalism sells. Even the more respected newspapers and magazines will use extreme wording to gain the interest of potential readers.

Secondly – people, including politicians, are making a living from speaking about this. As one consultant said “My clients won’t pay me to hear good news. We have to place emphasis on the problems that must be solved.” The more an idea is promoted as being “true” the more people will believe it.

So – do I believe there is a crisis?

I certainly believe we have problems. Problems in the types of individuals we have chosen as leaders. Problems in the way they present themselves. Problems in the choices they make in times of crisis. Problems in the development and retention of leadership talent.

But do these together add up to a crisis?
