Siren

by Sean Debaise

Sirens roar and echo in the crowded streets of Manhattan. I look up to see birds swarming the empty sky, leaving their cozy spots on the buildings above.

“Mom?!” screams a nearby child, frantically rotating and pulling on strangers' sleeves.

“What is that”!?! screams another civilian closeby.

I look to examine my surroundings to see people running in all directions, many running into the already filled streets.

“I’m sorry!” spits a girl into my ear as she is pushed into my still body. Leaning backward in an attempt to catch my balance, I look at the girl who ran into me: she had blood dripping from a large bump extending from her otherwise pale face. As I hit the ground, I still kept eye contact with her, noticing her scarred face staring back at me. Seconds later, hands wrapped around her nimble neck and she struggled to break away from the hands' strong grip. As I stood myself up again, she fell to the ground, puking a puddle of dark blood before hitting the ground.

“What the hell is happening!?!?” I scream, waving my hands in the thin air.

Is Gino ok?

“It’s happening! It’s finally happening! The great sickness is here!” shouted a rotund man before firing a gun into the air.

Smoke rose from the small handgun as people ducked close to the streets, the volume of their screams increasing.

“I need to get out of here!” I mumbled to myself, running towards my house which was located about two blocks away.

While running, fighting took place all around me, army cars racing past me.

What is happening?!

I made it to my house just as the sun set. Closing the door behind me, I heard several demonic screams, seeming to come from several rooms around my own in my high end apartment.

“Gino!?!?!?” I screamed frantically, waiting for a response.

“I’m in here.” Gino replied tensely, his voice shaking.

I instantly locked my door and boardedup my windows before flipping on the news.

“We are under a world lockdown. All has shut down and will remain shut down until the infection has passed. The government encourages all civilians to stay inside...” Suddenly, the anchorman begins to contort until falling, puss seeping from a large bump that grew from his back.

I drew my head back, gagging several times.

“Bash Bash Bash!” Rang from my front door. I ran weary to my door and glared through the peep hole.

“Mom!” I spit before unlocking the door sloppily and swinging the door open powerfully before giving her a welcoming hug.

“As soon as I heard about this infection, I drove on over to be with you!” She said, examining the apartment. “This is quite the bachelor pad!” she said, turning and giving me her classic wink.

“Mom!! That is a half an hour drive! But with the chaos going on in the streets, it could have taken hours!!!” I screamed.

Suddenly a person moved, a slight color change in the shading.

“Okay, there’s people out there!”
