Prohibiting the Rainy Season Application of Fertilizers
Jupiter’s natural water resources provide us with many benefits. In addition to their natural beauty, they supply water
for natural areas, wetlands, habitats, and irrigation, and off er residents and visitors activities such as fishing, boating,
paddling, kayaking and swimming. Maintaining and preserving this important resource is everyone’s responsibility,
which is why the Jupiter Town Council is considering adopting an ordinance that would prohibit the use of fertilizers from
June 1 through September 30. As this is Jupiter’s rainy season, the potential for nutrients found in fertilizers to become
harmful runoff that would be detrimental our water quality is much greater during those months. The proposed ban
is a best management practice to combat the negative impacts associated with nutrient pollution. Farms, golf courses
and specialized turf areas (such as athletic fields) are exempt from the proposed restrictions, but are encouraged to
be judicious about fertilizer application during the rainy season. Additionally, there are alternative fertilizers that do
not contain nitrogen or phosphorus – the harmful nutrients – that are available and not subject to the ban. Businesses
and residents are encouraged to use these alternative fertilizers year-round. The proposed ordinance is scheduled for a
second reading at Council’s October 4th Special Meeting. Should it be approved, it would become eff ective as of January
1, 2019. For more information or for any questions you may have, contact the Stormwater Department at 561-741-2705.

VOL 25 NO 4 • OCT-DEC 2018
The new facility will serve to provide a more secure,
hardened facility for the day-to-day operations of law
enforcement, and house the Town’s critical information
systems infrastructure. In addition, the facility will be
designed to serve as an Emergency Operations Center
(EOC) for the Town to use during hurricanes and other
disasters. In this capacity, it will serve as a command post
and house critical response personnel, allowing the Town
continuity of operations.
The project will be funded in the Town’s capital budget, or
Community Investment Program (CIP). The CIP is a 5-year
funding program that outlines all of the Town’s capital
projects and their funding sources, and is updated and
approved by the Town Council every year. The funding
identified in the Town’s CIP for the police and data center
totals $20.4 million, and will come from a combination of
property taxes and money generated from the half-cent
sales surtax approved by voters in the 2016 election.
