Calgary ’ s oldest neighbourhoods is undergoing an extensive revitalization . It is attractively located directly east of the downtown core and fronts the Bow River with River Walk , a pedestrian and cycle path .

The historic Simmons building ( 1 ) is home to three dining destinations . Phil & Sebastian serves their own locally-roasted coffee . Sidewalk Citizen Bakery serves freshly-baked breads and sweets , along with Mediterraneaninspired pizzas , sandwiches , and salads . Charbar , a contemporary , family-friendly Argentinian restaurant , serves seafood , steaks , thick-crust pizzas , and has a rooftop patio with unparalleled views of the downtown skyline and the Bow River . Just a few steps away from the Simmons building is Mari Bakeshop ( 2 ), a cute bakery that serves baked goods , coffee , and sandwiches on fresh bread .

Visit Liz and Lottie ( 3 ) for a unique selection of fun , quirky accessories and giftware . Take a taste of Calgary home with some locallyroasted coffee and espresso beans from Phil & Sebastian or Rosso . Charbar sells a selection of locally-made preserves , oils , and sauces . Studio Bell ( 4 ), home of the National Music Centre , has a well-curated , artist-inspired gift shop with vinyl records , artisanal jewellery , and cool clothing . Every other month Market Collective art and craft market pops up in the Chinese Cultural Centre , which is a short walk from East Village to Chinatown near Eau Claire Market . In the summer it moves outdoors next to the Simmons Building .

Studio Bell , home of the National Music Centre , is a new attraction with five stories of exhibition space for visitors to learn about Canadian music history and stories through multimedia exhibits and hands-on activities . Their neighbour , Fort Calgary ( 5 ), is a historic site and the birthplace of Calgary , where history buffs can explore the city ’ s past through interpretive displays and artifacts . A short jaunt across the George C . King Bridge is St . Patrick ’ s Island ( 6 ), an outdoor paradise on the Bow River featuring walking paths , a wading pool , and a picnic grove .
