RAISING A CHILD In early spring, I was sitting across the table from my 8-yearold at our local quilted tin diner. My sandwich came, but I didn’t dig in. “What’s wrong?” he asked. My stomach was suddenly feeling unsettled. “I’ll give you some energy work,” he said, (which is a big component of my Thai massage practice and the first tool I reach for in my medicine bag). My little guy stood up, came over to my chair and placed his palm near my tummy. He waited, then he sat down and started to eat his burger. I took a long breath and felt the upset lift. With a little note of surprise in my voice, I said, “It’s gone.” “Why are you surprised, Mummie?” Why, indeed.
