We had all the momentum coming off our last album cycle , and it was such a positive thing and we were ready to catapult that . You can ’ t buy that momentum . The wind slowly was taken out of our sails and now we ’ re just trying to build it back up .
Getting to this new album , from the 3 songs that are available , seems less compressed from a sound standpoint than the first record ?
The song Parasite deals with strong subject matter . What were some of the personal experiences you brought to the song ?
JOE : The guys created the music and the environment and I had to live inside this environment . I don ’ t necessarily pick an idea , like I ’ m going to write about this today . I took the word parasite and just started writing , and as it developed I went back and looked and it turned out that ’ s what I was writing about in regards to personal demons like anxiety . I thought it would be a little demented to write from the standpoint that my anxiety is like a monster , so to speak . I tried to write about everyone ’ s different demons , whether it be addiction or depression . It ’ s that thing that ’ s inside of you that talks shit to you and torments you and me taking on the role of being the sickness inside someone else .
JOE : Yeah , we switched producers . This album was done with Kevin Churko so sonically it was going to sound different . We had conversations that we wanted this record to have a wider sound and we wanted it to breathe a little bit more and maybe be a little more polished in a way , with a little more production to it . I ’ ve always appreciated that from other bands going up in their production value from album to album .
From a visual standpoint , you guys were known for wearing the white contacts ; not only in promo but live and now you changed to this post apocalyptic vibe . Why ?
JOE : It just felt like a time to change . You know different artists change for different albums . We talked about keeping consistent but we felt like we were in a different place . We could have stuck with it , but we just felt as the music changes , so should we .
How much do you miss getting up on stage with your boys and getting in the pocket and ripping it out ?
JOE : I miss it a lot . I ’ m enjoying my time down with my lady , but we play music . That ’ s what we do and we ’ ve been doing it for a long time . I miss that energy of being in a room playing and then going out and sharing that . You go from the weird , indescribable feeling of live shows to this and it feels like a part of you is missing . I know . It will come back .
