GEARING UP FOR ANOTHER TOUR
in 2019, THE ICONIC PIXIES RELEASE
30th ANNIVERSARY PACKAGE of
”Come on pilgrim and SURFER ROSA”.
In my 7 years of conducting interviews with a variety of industry heavyweights, it is rare that I have a conversation with artists who
had such a profound and direct effect on the 90’s alternative/grunge movement like The Pixies. With the day off we find Joey Santiago taking a nice
leisurely drive around LA in search of some fresh fruit, as he stated. Joey shares some never before told stories on the making of a record
that would change the face of rock just a few years later. From Kurt Cobain to Jon BonJovi there is no denying the influence of The Pixies.
What does the word Iconic
being thrown around mean to
you in relation to the work you
created?
JOEY: It just means we’ve been around
What goes through your mind
when you say WOW its been
30 years since the release of
Surfer Rosa?
JOEY: Im surprised its been 30 years and that
people still like it, That’s all I have to say about that.

Were you guys trying to make
a statement record when you
were in sessions for Surfer
Rosa?
JOEY: There was really no thought involved when
we were recording it, other than that we were
excited that we were going to record an album.

There was no concept of time. So 2 weeks was
plenty of time. Any more it would have felt kind
of weird after.
When rolling stone came out
and called it ground-breaking,
that has to be an amazing
moment for a young band.
What did you guys think about that?
JOEY: I don’t think I even read it at the time,
but for any one to say that is quite an honor.
We kind of knew we had something special go-
ing on. We were already playing live in Boston
and we started selling out the weekdays. Then
we became a weekend band and then we played
The Paradise. We had these live moments that
we knew were getting accepted, so recording the
album after that was just another validation
