‘ Out of Time ’ sprung up in the practice unit a couple of weeks before the recording . We all liked it so much that we rushed it in . But it was a completely organic song that we wrote on the fly . It came out great so we wanted to put that on there . ‘ New Disease ’ was a super last minute track as well . We didn ’ t really have vocals done before we went in the studio . I actually wrote them in the car on the way to the studio .
So how does that work for you ? Do you jot stuff down , carry something to record on while you ’ re driving ?
NS : As far as lyrics and vocals go , they all kind of hate me for it . I don ’ t actually write any of it down . A lot of it I kind of just make it up as I go in the booth . But it depends . There are a few tracks where I actually sat down and wrote . But for the rest of them , I had an overlying theme and I just put it together in the booth . And like I said , everyone hates me for it .
As far as the music goes , I ’ ve used a recorder for beats , guitar riffs , and stuff like that . But usually I just feel inspired and I sit in front of my computer and write a couple drum loops , do some guitars over it and start writing songs from there . I ’ ll let the guys listen to it and work on it for awhile . We pass it around and finalize it or we scrap it and move on .
What are your thoughts on this complete resurgence of nu metal and all of these great bands coming back ,
NS : For me , nu metal never really died . I ’ ve been listening to nu metal since I was in high school and I never really stopped . I ’ ve been stuck in my own little box from 1998-2004 , basically for like the last 15 or 16 years . So for me it never really died but it ’ s super refreshing to hear bands that I listened to in high school coming back . Like Motorgrater , for example . Their drummer , Noah , is our record label executive . And it just blows my mind that somebody that was in Motorgrater , a band that I listened to in high school , is interested in NoSelf and wanted to work with us .

NS : A lot of my songs that I write are all very personal . They basically reflect my own personal life . I ’ m trying to think of the best way to describe it . I just try to be as honest as possible . Fortunately , for this record , for the most part it ’ s about a girl . I wish there was more of a theme really but most of it is about this one girl .
