EDITOR IN CHIEF/Creative Director Michael Presti [email protected] ART Director Tuesday Evening, October 3rd- 11:09 am I look for the day when I can use this space and talk about how many amazing strides were made in the industry helping new, independent artists. Instead, we mourn the loss of another. This one, especially, closes the chapter on the story of one of the most successful artists in the history of rock and roll. His song writing ability was unchallenged. He never used a formula and his interweaving lyrical ability was unparalleled. Tom Petty was the unsuspecting rock star. He didn’t look like one. He didn’t act like one. He was as laid back as cool can get. Musically, he was like a quiet venomous snake coiled up for the hit. Nobody sounded like him. Nobody ever will. Tom was a champion for ALL ARTISTS; fighting with the in- dustry for artists’ rights to get paid royalties and for better contracts. He was one of the first artists to win the rights to all of his music and get out of a bad contract. Stan Lynch hit the first rim shot, which entered into a black and white silhouette of Tom and his Rickenbacker guitar, like he was in a Hitchcock video for a song from the Byrds. Then the big dark chorus cascaded down. “She’s a woman in love. She’s a woman in looooooooooooooooooove.” I got on my bike and peddled the 10 miles to the Platter Puss record and tape shop. And with the $10 I made from painting electronic football pieces, I bought, which was only my 3rd casette, behind Black in Black and The Elder. So I’m eclectic. There it was in the case; a copy of Hard Promises. I unraveled the tape and fast-forwarded to the song I just heard. The 10 mile trip back took 3 times as long because I rewound the tape 4 times to hear the song again and again. Walkman attached, I sang at the top of my lungs the whole way home. It was always on the play tape for my girlfriends. Tom, thank you so much for being a huge part of my innocence and youth and for all of the amazing music. I am going to miss you....alot.
