After our own Mark Bechthold's appointment to the office of NJCL President and former First Vice-President Shir Bloch's inauguration as state president, Vibhu Kolli was named First Vice-President in an emergency election. Since not all WJCL members were able to attend the meeting and hear Vibhu speak, I sat down with her to find out more about her goals for the year.

What drew you to the 1st VP position?

As 1st VP, I get the chance to put my knowledge of this organization to good use working with other board members to enhance JCLers’ experiences and bring new classicists into the fold. Bonus: somehow the board appreciates my mediocre sense of humor. (Editor’s Note: We don’t.) This position also gives me the opportunity to keep the lines of communication open between the WJCL and local chapters, along with promoting our organization to the general public.

What is your proudest accomplishment so far in your term?

Over the past few months, I created a promotional packet serving as a completely comprehensive guide to encourage schools to register for state convention. It includes slideshows, videos, and a step-by-step procedure for state registration. The packet not only gives potential new schools a glimpse into JCLers’ perspectives on this organization, but it also provides registered chapters a way to effectively communicate the impact the JCL has on our lives.

What are you most excited for during the remainder of the year?

With only a couple months remaining, I can’t wait for state convention! It gives me the opportunity`to reunite with old friends and create new connections throughout the state with people who share my love for the classics.

What advice would you give to anyone considering running for state office?

Express your passion for the JCL, and don’t be scared to put yourself out there. Feel free to contact us with any specific questions; although the election process can seem daunting at first, it will be worth it in the end. Also, make really cringey campaign posters, so you can get harassed about them until at least your next state convention.
