community around us is essential in today's society. Preserving the environment is necessary for improved quality of life and can even contribute to economic and social development. All around the world, communities are finding they have severe problems with drought, air, water pollution, or garbage. This service is dependent on people who are willing to carry out humanitarian work in the community. All you need is a bit of time, some friends, and a goal.
In honor of this theme, the WJCL's state projects will be a Milwaukee River Cleanup on Earth Day and volunteering at Habitat For Humanity Restore. We can have a firsthand impact on members of our community and environment. Partnering with Milwaukee Riverkeeper, we will protect, improve, and advocate for water quality, riparian wildlife habitat, and sound land management in the Milwaukee, Menomonee, and Kinnickinnic River Watersheds. We must envision a future in which people from all walks of life can enjoy the healthy waterways of the Milwaukee River Basin. The Habitat for Humanity Restore is a nonprofit home improvement store and donation center that sells new and gently used furniture, appliances, home accessories, building materials, and more to the public at a fraction of the retail price. As many of you surely know, April 21st-27th this year was National Classics Week, centered around Rome’s birthday to celebrate what is now a 2770 year old civilization. Each year, there is a theme, and this year’s was the Nine Muses, seven of which were chosen to represent each day during this significant week. Among these were Clio, the muse of history; Terpsichore, the muse of dance; and Calliope, the muse of epic poetry. This year’s celebrations included a cake frosted in celebration of Rome’s birthday and students dressed in their Latin gear. Today, many would call this holiday “extra,” but Mayor Soglin of Madison and Governor Walker of Wisconsin obviously did not, announcing this week as Madison and Wisconsin Classics Weeks, respectively. A huge achievement in increasing the WJCL’s publicity, their response to Margot’s and my request helped our organization gain recognition from the highest office in Wisconsin. We, the WJCL, take great pride in celebrating the Classics, and we wish to spread our joy in doing so.
