Update the JCL!

Salvete, v'omnes! Congratulations on the end of the school year! We made it through hard work and, although hopefully not nearly as difficult, stories of the the classics, with tales of Odysseus or Aeneas, motivated us to overcome difficulties. At the end of the rainbow (and in under 100 days), we will reach our reward-- NJCL Convention!

Thank you for website contest submissions. V'omnes, I am happy to report that there were a total of 11 local entries. Nine state chapter entries came in throughout the year. Under any stress from the year, you enthusiastically submitted your websites and were often excellently verbose in your currency updates. Thank you for currency updates, including for the month of May! It has been a great joy to see you keep JCL alive in the online world. So from now until convention, please keep everyone updated about what's going on in the JCL! And most importantly, GET PUMPED.

National Office: A Hot Pursuit

It's hard to believe that summer is just around the corner. I hope you all are as excited for convention as I am! I've been busy visiting with various candidates about campaign information and how the process works. There are already some excellent JCLers signed up in pursuit of a national officer position. However, you'll have to wait until convention to figure out who they are!

If you or one of your friends are still interested in running your own campaign at nationals there's still time to sign up. Candidates have until June 15 to send in the pre-filing form for candidacy. Feel free to message me or shoot me an email if you have any questions.

Besides a couple minor amendments that are on to the next phase of ratification, I've been working on a couple new projects. Currently, I am working with Aliyah and Ms. Johnston on creating a Constitutional Directory for the the website. This directory would contain a collection of state constitutions for JCLers to reference at their convenience.

In addition to the directory, I've developed a fun new activity for convention, the NJCL Campus Scavenger Hunt! This event will take place on Monday during a colloquia session at the national convention. The hunt will take you all around campus in order to get you familiar with your surroundings for the week. There will prizes and the event should be a lot of fun!

Have a wonderful summer. I hope to see you in San Antonio!

T-Shirts First, Togas Second

I cannot believe my term as an NJCL Officer is drawing to its close. Convention is always my favorite part of the summer, as I’m sure it is for many of you! With so many contests to prepare for, I want to remind the state historians of the t-shirt contest! Remember that for the t-shirt contest, you must submit your state’s t-shirt for Tuesday spirit, Old Western Classics, at Graphic Arts registration on Monday morning or evening. Don’t forget to order an extra t-shirt for this purpose so you are not short a t-shirt!

With convention so close, that means the NJCL Scrapbook will also be out very soon! If you or someone you know has taken pictures at a local or state event you want to see featured in the scrapbook please email me at [email protected]. Google Drive is an excellent way to share a large quantity of pictures without sending a ton of emails. Remember to include with your photo submissions a caption including who took the picture (and their state/office), what event the picture was taken at, when the picture was taken, and a description of what exactly the photo depicts.

I am so excited to see you all at Trinity in July! Don’t forget your cameras or your sunscreen!

Publications Contest Anew

Gratias to all of the editors who have submitted to the NJCL Publications Contests this year! I know how much work you put in to generate and format your newsletters, so never forget that there are sweepstakes points at stake…plus, you’ve joined the ranks of Team Editor, allegedly the noblest of offices in the JCL.

Your publications will be judged in two separate categories: local and state publications. Each category will be treated as a separate contest with separate awards. Three judges, including myself, publications chair Ms. Johnston, and one other former NJCL editor, will score your publications based on a rubric and the average of the three scores will be used to rank your publication against the rest. Please note that this year, the rubric has a few new additions. For example, captions are expected for most figures and bylines are expected for most articles. We will send comments home to each editor so they can improve their publication for the year after. Optimus vincat!

Corde aperto,
