STATE UPDATES

Certamen was held on March 19, 2019, at Princeton University. Awards were broken up by level and region. For the Northern region, Montclair High won first place for Level I and II; Ridgewood High won first for Upper level. For the Central region, Princeton High won first for Level I and Upper level; Ridge High, not to be mistaken with Ridgewood, won first palce for Level II. For the Southern region, Cherry Hill West won first place for Level I; Cherry Hill East was awarded first place for Level II and Upper level. Although not every team can be victorious, every team certainly had a great time.

Our annual state convention was held on May 4, 2019, at Benjamin Franklin middle school. The day was filled with written, prejudged, on-site, and Olympika contests. JCLers expressed themselves creatively through original song and improvisation; they also listened to spoken Latin and observed ancient Roman weaponry and armor. Moreover, students competed in Olympika such as capture the flag, basketball, and chariot racing. State convention is also where we held our caucus in which Consul, Proconsul, Parliamentarian, Corresponding Scriba, and Recording Scriba were elected. I am beyond stoked for what we will accomplish in our upcoming board year.

My fellow New Jersey delegates and I cannot wait to see you all this summer at national convention in Fargo, North Dakota!

NEW JERSEY

NORTH DAKOTA

Salvete omnes,

Tempus fugit! I can’t believe it’s almost the end of the school year. On May 7th, middle and high schoolers in Latin attended Iverson Latin Days at UND (University of North Dakota) in Grand Forks. Iverson Latin Days was named in honor of Dr. Stanley Iverson, Professor Emeritus of Classical Studies at Concordia College and the founder of the event. It’s the equivalent to a condensed state convention (and who doesn’t love state convention). Attendees took tests, wore togas, and participated in the Colosseum Bowl. Most importantly, the day was spent hanging out with fellow Latin students.

Also, hope to see as many people as possible at Nationals!
