STATE UPDATES

CALIFORNIA

Greetings from the Golden State!

California enjoyed a wonderful State Convention, hosted by none other than the legendary Miramonte High School JCL. JCLers trekked from all corners of the state, some traveling over 400 miles, to attend the two-day event. Our classical community came together in the spirit of fostering brotherhood with their fellow Latin and Greek enthusiasts.

Our new board was inducted at the final general assembly. We are proud of the hard work and dedication of our 2018-19 board, and look forward to another excellent year. Thank you to our teachers for their dedication to the JCL, our parents for their support, and our fellow JCL members. Keep our torch alight!

To our NJCL family: we look forward to spending the week with you in Fargo!

Love,

CAJCL

The GJCL recently held its annual state convention at Rock Eagle 4-H Center from April 12th to 14th. This weekend, widely regarded as the highlight of the school year for JCLers in Georgia, featured intense games of Ludi and Olympika, highly-anticipated elections, creative and dramatic arts, intellectual battles of trivia and Certamen, and much more. Rock Eagle, the beloved site of GJCL’s state convention, accommodated almost fifty schools and over a thousand delegates in a celebration of classics and camaraderie.

Meanwhile, the school year in Georgia is coming to a close as finals and exams begin to wrap up. After a successful and memorable state convention, the former officers as well as the newly-elected board met to plan National Convention logistics and the following year. The GJCL can’t wait for national convention, and we’re looking forward to reuniting with old friends and making new ones in Fargo!

Salvete fellow members of NJCL!

The state of Maryland is very excited about our wonderful year of MDJCL activities. We had three Certamen competitions this year in addition to a spelling bee and a scavenger hunt. We ended our year with the state convention at Easton High School. All of the members that attended convention had a great time playing Certamen, participating in academic testing, making and viewing artwork and so much more! We had two schools join us for the first time this year and we are very excited to welcome them into our MDJCL family.

In addition to these state activities we held our MDJCL officer elections. Our new state officers are Mika Kretzmann-Clough of Eleanor Roosevelt High School (President), Natalie Trouba of Eleanor Roosevelt High School (Vice President), Michael Gomez of Eleanor Roosevelt High School (Parliamentarian), Hannah Marie Blackwood of Easton High School (Historian), and Grace Rish of Saint John’s Catholic Prep (Editor). MDJCL will have a small but mighty presence at NJCL convention this year to support our very own Natasha Panduwawala as NJCL President! If you see us please come say hello.
