SPRING PLANNING

MEETING RECAP

he NJCL Officers and Committee convened in Arlington, Virginia from Friday,

February 1st to Sunday, February 3rd for the annual Spring Planning Meeting. While most of the adult committee members wisely went to bed earlier on Friday night, the officers huddled in the hotel lobby during weird hours of the night, updating each other on personal and JCL-related happenings. With NJCL President Natasha Panduwawala unofficially kicking off the meeting on Friday night, the officers looked forward to a smooth, productive Spring Planning Meeting.

Saturday was an eventful day. Meetings began early in the morning at the hotel, and the committee and officers combined their meetings for a couple hours before splitting into two separate rooms. The officers discussed workshops and activities for National Convention, advertisement strategies for National Classics Week, and individual duties. They were met with a pleasant surprise when the Virginia JCL student officers joined the NJCL officers for lunch. Although this was their first time meeting, the two groups got along very well, and lunchtime flew by.

After several additional hours of meetings, each officer filmed a short video clip discussing her favorite part of being a national officer. These clips were for NJCL Parliamentarian Layla Fistos's project to inform JCLers about being an officer and encourage more students to run for office. The videos will be released soon!

When the individual video clips were finished, the officers began filming for the National Classics Week video, but not before seeking inspiration from the videos of previous years. Within a couple hours, the officers had explored almost every crevice of the hotel. Stay tuned for the National Classics Week video put together by the NJCL Officers! This will also be released soon.

Later that night, Mr. Webb, the NJCL Constitutional chair, treated the officers by driving them to Washington D.C. to visit the National Mall. It turned out that eleven o'clock at night was not a popular touring time, as the usual urban bustle was nowhere to be found. The National Mall was even more breathtaking at night. The officers saw the Lincoln Memorial, the Capitol building, the Washington Monument, and more!

For the rest of the evening, the Officers finished filming a few more clips for the National Classics Week video and relaxed together in the lobby, dreading Sunday morning. While Spring Planning meeting was shorter than the one in fall, all members of the committee and the officers were able to enjoy their stay together in Arlington. Spending many hours discussing convention details and National Classics Week only heightened their excitement for the 2019 National Convention!
