The Jokhang Temple was built by the first King "Songtsem Gampo" of Tibet as premises for the Buddha statues that were suppose to bought by his Nepalese and Tang wives. The temple was built in around 647 and had only eight shrines. But it has been extensively renovated and expanded over the years under the Yuan, the Ming and the Qing dynasties. The temple is mostly Timber and is divided into 4 stories. The tops of the domes are golden while the entire temple is open air. There is a central square which accede complete view of the entire temple.
