D . Allen Bucktron
Creamery Pickups Black Cat
David Allen of D . Allen pickups used to be a NASA research scientist specializing in electromagnetism . Now he designs and winds guitar pickups for a living . Go ahead , let that sink in for a minute . Alright , so we ’ ve established that the man is preposterously overqualified for his job . This is a good thing , but either way Mr . Allen is currently making some of the best guitar pickups around . I reviewed his Hot Vintage Tele set for TRW awhile back and was totally gobsmacked by its blend of vintage kerrang and modern punchiness . Allen ’ s Filter ’ Troninspired , humbucker-sized Bucktrons are no less impressive . He likes to base his pickup designs off a particularly fine sounding vintage example , and as such the Bucktron design is based on a vintage Filter ’ Tron from 1963 . Construction is uniformly top notch , and sets are available in Classic or Hot Rebel winds , with the Hot Rebel variation having a glassy high end that is tailored to complement the sound of heavy solid-body guitars .
Creamery Pickups is a U . K . based custom pickup winder from Manchester who has gained a notable following in recent years , primarily for its lovingly hand-wound Jazzmaster pickups . The company has a colorful and wide-ranging selection of products besides the JMs , however , and one of the most interesting of these is the humbucker-sized , Filter ’ Tron-inspired Black Cat line . The Black Cats come in a few different variations , with mounting options and sonic profiles to work in just about any guitar . The hotter , ballsier Black Cat variants offer a superbly pleasing , highly dynamic blend of tonal characteristics that might best be described as PAF-meets-Filter ’ Tron , allowing for open , sparkling clean tones that gently give way to a threatening snarl when gain is introduced . They are truly excellent , easily some of the best Filter ’ Tron replicas currently in production . And despite each Creamery order being custom made by hand , pricing is quite reasonable .
