Tone Report Weekly Issue 159 | Page 23

There is only one pedal on this list that is so ghastly and abusive that it is not even commercially available ; it is known only as the Uglyface . An enigmatic and somewhat legendary madman named Tim Escobedo designed the Uglyface , and it is truly a horror for the ages . It is analogous to nothing , existing in its own frightening world of unrelenting sonic mayhem . Most distortion and fuzz boxes simply clip the incoming guitar signal and send it out the other end in slightly modified fashion , but the Uglyface gives the guitar signal 40 lashes , puts it on the rack , and tortures it
to within an inch of its life , sending it out the other end beaten , bloodied , and totally unrecognizable , even to its mother . In more specific audio terms , it sounds supercompressed and distorted without the slightest suggestion of dynamics , and is extremely glitchy and synthy . There ’ s also a barfy sort of envelope filter component to the pedal ’ s sound that I ’ ve never heard anywhere else . The Uglyface can ’ t really be bought anywhere , but there are places on the Internet to find schematics and parts , including this very magazine ( Issue 154 ). Google away .
