If reverb is where I most use my iStomp,
modulation is probably my second
most frequent use. The iStomp covers
just about any type of mod you need—
tremolo, vibrato, chorus, phaser, ring
modulator (it has a model of the old DOD
Gonkulator!), rotating speaker, chorus,
and flanger. I mentioned it before, but
the iStomp is worth its price for the
Magic Fingers Vibrato alone. It’s one
of the better vibrato effects I’ve used
and is intense without getting seasick
or grossly out of tune. You can certainly
get the “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds”
tone, but you can use it for more subtle
proto-chorus sounds—that’s how I use
it. And just like that red-boxed analog
delay model I mentioned earlier, there’s
also a spot-on blue boxed two knob
analog chorus. And it sounds pretty
damn authentic, right down to the
slight volume drop that occurs when it’s
switched on. The other standout for me
in the modulation section is the Stone
Phase. It has controls for only Rate and
Color. It sounds legit and I don’t think I
have to tell you what it’s based on.
I‘m running out of space and I didn’t
even cover the Compressor/Pitch/Filter
section. Just like with the other effects
types, there are some fantastic sounds
in this section. My favorite is the Red
Coral Dual Detune. Think of it as a sort of
“automatic double tracker.” It offers two
voices that are adjustable for ±24 cents
of pitch shift. This creates a sort of chorus
effect but one that doesn’t sweep with an
